The Flinders Island Vegetation dataset was created to map vegetation on Flinders island at 1: 25000 scale. The mapping complements mapping of forests undertaken in the Regional Forest Agreement (RFA). The focus of the mapping is non forest vegetation. The mapping will allow strategic direction of Bushcare funding on the island through on-ground identification of priority vegetation communities. Non-forest vegetation mapped includes Eucalypt woodland, heath complexes, non-Eucalypt small trees, non-Eucalypt trees, heath, saltmarsh, scrub, grassland, wetland riparian vegetation and agricultural land. Aerial photograph interpretation is primarily used for vegetaiton mapping and field checking of vegetation communities was extensive. Vegetation condition, where measured during field-verification is also recorded, and disturbances including grazing, burning, exotics, fragmentation are noted both from aerial photograph interpretation and field verification. The mapping is produced using Genamap, a powerful data-driven geographic information system with a custom made interface, specifically tailored to facilitate specialised mapping. The interface provides a simple method for complex data-entry ino an Oracle database.
